It is the most widely spoken Slavic language. It is one of the world’s most widely spoken languages, spoken by about 301,000,000 people in the world as either a mother tongue or a second language. Russian speakers are distributed in Russia and its neighboring regions, such as the Commonwealth of Independent States. It is the official language in Russia, and one of the official languages of the United Nations. It is an unofficial language but is widely spoken in Ukraine, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, and, to a lesser extent, in other countries that were constituent republics of the Soviet Union.
This is the most geographically widespread language in Eurasia, the most widespread of the Slavic languages, and the largest mother tongue in Europe. Russian belongs to the Indo-European language family and is one of the three (or four including Rusyn) languages of the East Slavic languages. Examples are attested from Old Slavonic books among the East starting from the 10th century. The language is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.
